So you’re thinking of making your own wood pellets? If you are, one important factor to take into consideration is the pellet machine that you’re going to buy to make it happen. Before you can find a machine that will give you exactly what you need, you first need to understand every aspect about it and making the pellets.

If you’re thinking of making wood pellets in particular, there are things you need to remember. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t just throw the sawdust into the machine and expect the highest quality of pellets to come out from it. There are standards, and if you are making your own, then you can easily follow these because naturally you want the best results.

First of all, the raw materials should be completely dry before you put them into the machine. However, it should contain at least 10% moisture to help with them binding solidly together. It should be noted here that being wet and having moisture are two different things, so don’t be confused.

Next thing you need to keep in mind is that some wood have enough lignin in them that you don’t need a binder anymore, but some don’t so you’ll need to add something for them to bind together properly. Vegetable oil is typically used to do the trick so if you are using wood that doesn’t have enough lignin like some hardwood, you can use vegetable oil.
