Cupra Born 204 hp 58 kWh, test contact with the electrical breaker

Some cars define a brand, that serves to start new eras, to establish a way forward. They do not usually appear regularly, but this time we were able to test one of those precursors. We are talking about the Cupra Born, the first electric model of the Spanish firm and the one that is the second copy of its own, with no direct relationship with SEAT. It is a product based on the of the Volkswagen Group, but with much to contribute.

In Cupra, they speak of Born as that key that will give them access to new countries and markets. Also as the model that will help them lower their average emissions (something increasingly necessary). In fact, it is a car that has sustainability very much in mind, even in the materials it uses. We have had the opportunity to share a test of contact with this electric and we are going to tell you what we thought patterjack.

Exterior

To start by saying that it is possible the car with the most passionate (and most suggestive) design among those that have been launched with the MEB platform. El Born advocates those recognizable lines that Cupra has worn since it became independent from SEAT. With it, they have wanted to make a vehicle that they qualify as “sexy”, which aims to create desire and exalt emotions. He also wants to show that electromobility doesn’t have to be boring. It is very inspired by the city of Barcelona, specifically in the El Born neighborhood.

Hence, the sensation of movement is sought even when the car is stationary. They achieve this with details such as tension lines on all surfaces, with a rising waist and a floating roof. Although probably what most attracts the attention of the Cupra Born is its front. The hood is sloped forward and downward to end in the Cupra lettering. It is striking how negative surfaces are used for their arrangement in that intermediate zone.

The sharp LED headlights or the huge grille at the bottom are also not overlooked. Like a good Cupra, it has details in Copper colors, such as the V on the bottom of the logos themselves. Although on the side what takes all the attention are the wheels of up to 20 inches, some with very suggestive and aerodynamic designs. In this view, you can also see the detail of the floating roof, with a C-pillar that introduces the triangular motifs that have always represented Cupra, or the prominent side skirts.

The rear is the least distinguished area of this model. There you can see more clearly its resemblance to the Volkswagen ID.3, with which it shares practically everything. It starts with a huge roof spoiler that gives it that point of sportiness that this brand always seeks. In the intermediate zone, some LED taillights are joined by the center. The lower part is finished off by a kind of diffuser in the color of the body that also contributes to the aerodynamic level.

Although as we said, the entrails do not deceive and its dimensions are very similar to those of the Volkswagen ID.3 with which it shares architecture. It is 4,322 mm long, 1,809 mm wide, and 1,537 mm high. With those shapes that might remind those of a minivan, the 2,767 mm wheelbase stands out, leaving very small overhangs.

Inside

Inside the Cupra Born, there is the main premise: everything revolves around the driver. The command post looks well resolved and has a multifunction steering wheel with touch buttons that are used to control various functions. Through it, you can see 5.3-inch digital instrumentation with very good graphics, but it does not have the size or customization possibilities that other rivals. Just to your right, in the same frame, is the gear selector. Optionally you can also mount the Head-Up Display with augmented reality.

The central area of the dashboard is covered by the 12-inch touch screen, an element that comes standard and that serves to control all the infotainment. It has a very fast interface, outstanding graphics and its ease of use is enviable. Nor does it fall short in the connectivity section, as it offers Apple Carplay and Android Auto; in addition to Cupra Connect technology through the brand’s application.

Although if there is something that has caught my attention about the interior of the Cupra Born, it has been its remarkable quality and the care for its materials. We already anticipated that there was news in this section and the firm introduces sustainable details such as the Seaqual fabric in the central part of the seats, which is made from recycled marine plastics. The neoprene-style fabric on some surfaces or the Dinamica fabric (similar to Alcantara) with a pattern of triangles made by laser is also an outstanding touch.

The interior of the Cupra Born can be chosen in two shades: Shark Gray and a blue similar to Petrol Blue, although somewhat darker. As usual, the seams are in Copper making a contrast. Sports seats are standard, which despite having a bucket design, find the right balance between sportiness and comfort. In our unit, they have manual settings, but optionally electric, heated, and with massage, a function can be mounted.

The habitability is very good in this electric, at least in the front seats. Its exterior shapes that evoke a minivan due to the height, make it benefit from the inside and do not put any kind of difficulty to users in this regard. The second row of seats is not far behind and offers outstanding legroom. It will be enough for users up to 1.85 meters, with a head hole also quite good. The central square is fairer due to its lack of shape and lower width.

Trunk

The boot is not one of the highlights of the Cupra Born. In this case, priority has been given to a generous space in the rear seats and this surface has been left with 385 liters. It is not a bad figure, but some rivals surpass it and that complement it with the front boot, which in this example does not appear. The positive part is that its forms are very regular and usable.

We also found that under the floor there is a small hole, although it is not enough to accommodate the charging cable, only the anti-puncture kit. We cannot expect a spare tire on this issue either. If we need more space, the rear seats can always be folded in two parts (60:40) to leave a maximum capacity that exceeds 1,000 liters.

equipment

The Cupra Born is offered in our country with four levels of equipment, having a fairly complete endowment from the beginning. As standard it already has 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless access, and start, rain sensor, climate control, sports seats, heated steering wheel, or 12-inch touchscreen multimedia system. Driving assistants such as cruise control with limiter, involuntary lane departure alert, pre-collision warning, or automatic city braking also appear.

Optionally, you can add the Advanced Pack, which has details such as the navigator, the darkened windows, the rear camera, the predictive ACC, the Light Assist, or the recognition of traffic signs. For 1,720 euros more, the Pro Pack can be equipped, which completes the above with seats upholstered in Dynamics, electric, heated and with massage; 360º camera, Side Assist, Travel Assist, rear traffic alert or automatic parking assistant.

The top of the range would be the Top Pack, for which another 2,300 euros would have to be added to the account to add the Beats Audio sound system, the Head-Up Display, the heated windshield, the adaptive chassis control, or the panoramic roof of crystal. An option that will arrive in 2022 and that will be interesting will be the e-boost Pack. It will be available in the most powerful versions and will serve to offer superior power for 30 seconds. To improve its performance, you can also opt for the wider 20-inch rim tires, together with a 340 mm front brake system.

Motor

The mechanical range of the Cupra Born, the first electric from the Spanish firm, will become quite complete with three power levels (150, 204, and 231 hp), in addition to three battery sizes (45, 58, and 77 kWh). The one with less power and range is not yet for sale, but it would already be enough to travel about 340 kilometers on a charge. The largest battery size could get up to 540 kilometers.
